Through the concerted effort by Frost Brown Todd’s Insurance Industry Group and the Kentucky Department of Insurance with the assistance of Representative Bart Rowland, Kentucky has amended its agent/producer licensing laws to permit persons to obtain a limited lines travel insurance agent license by designating Kentucky as their home state if their state of residence does not provide a license for a limited line of authority for travel insurance.

The change will permit persons who reside in states that have no line of authority, including individual line of authority, for travel insurance to obtain a resident limited lines license through Kentucky, and then obtain a non-resident license in those states that have not adopted the National Council of Insurance Legislators Limited Lines Travel Insurance Model Act or variation thereof.

In addition, Kentucky has also promulgated proposed regulatory changes to 806 KAR 9:070 which will remove the requirement of a state limited lines travel examination/testing that had little relevance to travel insurance in order to qualify for a limited lines travel insurance license. The amendment was advocated by Frost Brown Todd’s Insurance Industry Group and endorsed by the executive staff of the Kentucky Department of Insurance. The removal of the examination requirement for a limited lines travel insurance license will reduce regulatory burdens, promote access for this license type, as well as increase the availability of beneficial travel insurance products without sacrificing consumer protection.
